Healthy People 2020 Physical Activity Objective
Health Promotion Plan
Brittney Murray
University of West Florida
The chosen topic for the Health Promotion Project is the Healthy People 2020 Physical
Activity with the objective to reduce the proportion of adults who engage in no leisure-time
physical activity [PA-1] (, 2019). This topic was inspired by the target
audience’s response to, and interest in the fitness journey of this writer’s spouse. Several church
members, including leaders have inquired about the development of a possible fitness program.
Increasing physical activity is optimally vital along the continuum of life as it provides
numerous health benefits as listed by
In youth it improves cognition, bone and heart health, and reduces the risk of depression.
In adults it can prevent eight types of cancer, reduce the risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s
disease, heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and depression,
improve bone health, physical function, and overall quality of life. For pregnant women,
it reduces the risk of postpartum depression. For all age groups it reduces the risk of
excessive weight gain. (, 2019)
Presentation Information
With the approval and permission of Associate Pastor, Chuck Coburn, (who can be
reached via email at, or by telephone at 850-728-7432), the
presentation will take place on Saturday, July 27, 2019 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm, at The River
of Life Church in Crawfordville, Florida. This presentation will be advertised by word of mouth,
invitation, a social media event page, and fliers posted and distributed in the church.
Target Audience
The intended target audience will include church members of all ages, genders, and
backgrounds, with the goal of promoting physical activity for health and wellness in an
environment that will encourage community, teamwork, fellowship, and accountability. Even
though this specific objective targets persons over 18 years of age, the presentation is extended to
all ages, with the thought that implementing these behaviors at an earlier age will have a greater
impact on future statistical data and participation percentages. Youth participation may also
have a positive impact on adult participation and vice versa.
According to, “More than 80% of adults and adolescents do not meet
the guidelines for both aerobic and muscle-strengthening activities” (, 2019).
Data from identifies three relevant negative factors prevalent in this target
audience; rural residency, advancing age, and low income. Crawfordville is a rural country
town near Tallahassee, the capital of Florida. Its poverty rate is 12.9%, with 15.7% of the 32,461
population over the age of 65 (, 2018).
The goal of this presentation is to provide education to stimulate interest and participation
in the development of a spiritually-led physical activity focus group. Upon completion of this
presentation, participants will form groups and devise friendly, competitive plans to increase
physical activity, with the leaders offering weekly incentives and recognition to promote
membership and retention.
Learning Domains & Objectives
According to an article by Barile, as explained by Dr. Ratey, exercise “‘First, optimizes
your mind-set to improve alertness, attention, and motivation; second, it prepares and encourages
nerve cells to bind to one another, which is the cellular basis for logging in new information; and
third, it spurs the development of new nerve cells from stem cells in the hippocampus’ which in
short helps the brain get ready to learn and makes retaining information easier” (Barile, 2017).
Based on this idea that exercise improves learning, the vision for the presentation will combine
education with light physical activity including yoga and, stretching followed by a brisk walk
around the church campus to demonstrate the ease in which physical activity can be incorporated
into daily life.
The affective domain, focuses on the participant’s feelings, “emotions, interests, beliefs,
attitudes, values, and appreciations” (Bastable, et al, 2011, p. 390). One affective objective is, At
the beginning of the group discussion, prior to education, participants will acknowledge, or admit
(receiving) a need for increased physical activity. (Bastable, 2011, p. 389). Another objective is,
At the beginning of group discussion, each participant will express (responding) at least two
personal reasons for desiring to increase physical activity (i.e. weight loss and increased activity
tolerance). (Bastable, 2011, p. 389). In addition to group discussion, the role-modeling teaching
method will be used in this domain as we both share our personal reasons for increasing physical
activity. (Bastable, 2011, p. 391).
The cognitive domain “addresses the development of the learner’s intellectual abilities,
mental capacities, understanding, and thinking processes” (Bastable, et al, 2011, p. 388). One
objective for the cognitive domain is, Following the educational presentation, participants will
collaboratively describe (comprehension) three benefits of increased physical activity in a group
discussion forum (i.e. lowered risk of the following; heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure,
type 2 diabetes, breast and colon cancer, or depression, etc.). (Bastable, 2011, p. 389).
(, 2019). This teaching method will include group discussion, eliciting
perceived benefits, positive, and negative factors that affect physical activity, followed by
information, data, and statistics from the Healthy People 2020 source. Another cognitive
objective is, Following the educational presentation, each participant will identify (knowledge)
one short term and one long term goal they plan to achieve by increasing physical activity (i.e.
ten pounds weight loss, participating in a marathon). (Bastable, 2011, p. 389). A written tool
will allow the learner to creatively document their goals (colorful affirmations) to post in a
visible location as motivation throughout their journey. (Bastable, 2011, p. 389).
The psychomotor domain, is crucial for the physical activity as it is the foundation of the
presentation. One psychomotor objective is, At the end of the presentation each participant will
choose (perception) an accountability partner(s) to devise a plan for physical fitness activity
throughout the week. (Bastable, 2011, p. 389). Another objective is, One week after
presentation, participants will have performed (guided response mechanism and complex overt
response) 15-30 minutes of physical activity, at least three times a week as logged by an
application, or witnessed by accountability partner. (Bastable, 2011, p. 389).
The second edition of the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans recommends at
least 150 to 300 minutes a week of moderate-intensity aerobic activity, like brisk walking, and at
least two days per week of muscle strengthening activity like lifting weights (, 2019).
The duration or periods of activity will have to increase over time to meet these guidelines.
Keeping in mind that it is an inappropriate teaching technique to combine psychomotor
learning with other domains, as it decreases efficacy, the final fifteen minutes of the presentation
will focus strictly on the walk to demonstrate the ease in which physical activity can be
incorporated into daily life (Bastable, et al, 2011).
It is this writer’s hope that this presentation will be a catalyst for increased physical
activity, having a positive and long-lasting impact on the community. It is the plan to promote
fellowship and competition, offering incentives, which will extend and increase participation.
Incorporating faith provides a holistic approach which targets the audience’s health, wellness,
stress management, interaction, and spirituality.
