Career Journal #1
Career Journals give you the opportunity to connect your thoughts and feelings. The process of
journaling can help you identify – and process – your thoughts and ideas. These journals are
private and will not be shared with other students. Please be open, honest and thoughtful. To
aid in your process, I will respond to each journal with feedback.
Grading: Each journal is worth a maximum of 10 points. To receive full credit you must write at
least 1 page (not including the directions and questions), be thoughtful and reflective, and use
good grammar and sentence structure. I know you “can” answer the questions in 1-2 lines; but
to truly benefit – and receive full credit – you will need to be more thoughtful and thorough.
Topic for Journal #1: Think of a career you have considered recently, wanted to pursue when
you were a child, or a dream career that you would like if there were no obstacles. For full
credit, you must thoroughly respond to all 4 questions below.
1. What career are you picturing?
2. Describe as much as you can about the environment, the people and the activities you
are picturing. What do you think an average day might be like for this person? With
whom do they interact? What are they wearing, doing, saying or thinking? What is the
scenery – is it outdoors or indoors, in an office or a field setting? What types of
materials help this person do their job? (e.g. animals, medical equipment, computers,
laboratory equipment, computers, a sewing machine, a paintbrush)?
3. What makes this career appealing to you?
4. Do you imagine yourself taking the steps to pursue this career? Why or why not?
