The reason why I feel compelled to write about culture is that there exist a lot of cultures
around the world and particularly in the United States. The United States is often recognized for
its culture that ranges from popular culture to Folk Culture, high culture, low culture to even
mass culture and dominant culture (Crunden, 2015). Despite the existence of all these forms of
culture in this country, only a few citizens realize and are aware of such a culture. As such, this
forms the basis of why I would like to write about culture in America, to create awareness and
educate the American people of their culture, and especially the upcoming generation that seems
to be oblivious of their traditions.
I believe that writing about culture can significantly help a lot of people in society to
understand a majority of factors that happen in the community that they do not comprehend, and
that relates to culture. Culture can be considered to be a good topic for it not only education but
forms the ground and foundation for good morals and ethics in the society (Murphy, 2010).
Knowledge about culture and our way of life signify a majority of things that surround us like
society’s food, sports, religion, and work of art, and thus, it is significant that the community
becomes acquainted with it.
Writing about culture is paramount in ensuring the wellbeing of future generations as it
encompasses the American values, beliefs, practices, behaviors, and even material objects that
the upcoming generations should be taught about if they are to stand up by themselves and

continue with the culture of their forefathers. The topic of culture is good as it will help many
individuals recognize and appreciate all aspects of the American culture ranging from mass
culture to the working-class culture that is relevant for their knowledge.

How Social Media Influences Culture
I am compelled to write about this culture because I have realized that it has changed many
cultural aspects of the American people. A people’s culture includes their beliefs, values, practices,
behaviors, and material things among other aspects. Social media is a common contemporary
concern in the lives of Americans, young and old. It has the capacity to change the way of life of
the people. In the United States, for instance, the mass media in the modern world has shifted the
focus of how they did things, which included learning about people such as politicians through
interviews and it is now judging people on their social media posts, especially twitter posts. Social
media also brings global cultures into the United States and has made many Americans try new
foods, fashions, dances and music, and many other cultural components. Social media itself is a
change of how news spread from the former practices where print media and digital but noninteractive media such as television
This topic will make a great subject to discuss because it is a modern issue that affects
American society greatly. Moreover, the effect of social media on culture is great and I can relate.
I realized that I have more than a thousand friends and followers on social media, and I cannot
count 15 real-life friends. The topic can also draw the interest of many people especially at this
time when the president tweets very often. Most importantly, I feel that the topic is a good subject
because there is sufficient content to write about as scholars have explored the issue, and there are
many popular sources of information on the same. I also feel that social media itself can offer some
of the insight I need to know on the topic, which will be a trusted firsthand source of information
obtained through observation.
The topic is of great importance to society. The contemporary parent is trying to seek
information on whether allowing their children embrace the use of social media at tender ages is
Wei 3
right or wrong. Some people also seek to understand the effects of social media in their lives, for
instance, if it can cause addiction and make them loose real-life friends. With many people having
questions about the impact of social media on their lives, writing on the topic can offer detailed
insight to many members of the society on what they need to know.
A scene of people dining in a certain film drew me to the idea. The whole family that
includes parents and two teenage children, a boy and a girl comes to the dining table, they pull out
their smartphones, and they start serving food. Nobody speaks to anyone at the table, and everyone
is busy chatting with their virtual friends on social media. The whole family ended up not even
realizing how the food was, and they even eat smaller portions than they do on normal days when
they are focusing on the meal. This made me realize that social media affects the American
people’s way of life to extremes and it needs to be discussed.
I think that this is a strong topic and there should be ample literature out there to use when writing. Be sure to start to
develop specific sub-themes to focus on so that you do not get caught up in the vast amount of literature regarding social
media which does exist. If you need any help finding sources or crafting your argument feel free to reach out and/or visit my

Annotated Bibliography: Effects of Social Media on Culture
Auter, Z. J., & Fine, J. A. (2018). Social Media Campaigning: Mobilization and Fundraising on
Facebook. Social Science Quarterly (Wiley-Blackwell), 99(1), 185–200.
https://doi.org/10.1111/ssqu.12391
The authors examined the use of social media during campaigning periods by candidates
and their campaign teams to reach out to the public for support and mobilize funds for
campaigning. According to the authors, their study aimed to advance the knowledge
concerning why some candidates in the united states political arena prefer to use social
media to mobilize people and raise funds than other candidates. The researchers
examined a sample of about 15,000 Facebook posts that were made by the campaign
teams of various U.S. candidates that were randomly selected. They examined the way
the candidates and the characteristics of the campaigns influenced their use of social
media platforms for campaigning. The researchers found that the candidates that most
commonly used social media were those that had minimal resources for campaigns
against more prominent opponents. Also, the characteristics of the race that include the
competitiveness of the race as well as the positioning of the candidate in the race were
important factors that affected their use of social media. Those who were trailing their
challengers were more likely to use Facebook. Therefore, the conclusion was that while
social media is a very common campaign tool that allows people to know their
candidates, candidates in challenging races, as well as those with minimal resources, are
more likely than their peers to use social media campaigning actively. The paper shows

evidence of how social media has revolutionized the transfer of messages in function
such as campaigning and made it easy for people to reach their audience.
Park, M., Park, J., Baek, Y. M. & Macy, M. (2017). Cultural values and cross-cultural video
consumption on YouTube. PLoS ONE, 12(5), 1–13.
https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0177865
The authors wanted to understand the effects of YouTube, a social media platform that
allows for the sharing of videos in facilitating cultural convergence in the world.
According to the authors, YouTube and other video-sharing social networking sites offer
access to materials that are diverse regarding culture from all over the globe. Therefore,
YouTube makes it possible to test theories that posit that the internet allows for cultural
convergence. Thus, the authors drew on a daily listing of the videos that were most
popular on the social media site in 58 countries. The authors then investigated the
viewership of videos in countries that had different cultural values, gross domestic
product, language and rate of internet usage and coverage. The authors found that social
media indeed offered global access to diverse cultural products. However, enhanced
technological capabilities did not result in universal cultural convergence. Rather, cultural
values constrained the consumption of popular videos on the site. Cross-cultural
convergence was more advanced in countries that were cosmopolitan and had values that
favored power inequality as well as individualism. The research article will offer an
understanding of how social media sites such as YouTube that allow people to share
content facilitates the exchange of culture. The research backs the idea that social media
allows cross border sharing of music, fashion and other cultural aspects in the world. The
research also shows the factors that affect the sharing of cultures across various countries

Smith, D. (2015). Does every opinion count? International Journal of Market Research, 57(4),
517–520. https://doi.org/10.2501/IJMR-2015-044
The scholar examines the rise of the current opinion culture, where everyone has
opportunities to express their feelings about various issues. The article examines how the
traditional media such as radio and television offers people the chance to interact with
other people through phone calls and opinion programs. For instance, the scholar gives
the example of BBC that invites people to talk about various issues even though they may
not be very competent on the issues. The author examines the role of the opinion culture
to radio and other mass media and encourage the audience to think about why they
should be responsible when offering opinions. Social media is one of the technologies
that allow people to give opinions due to the interactive nature that allows people to
respond to posts and also make their posts. The authors, for instance, talk about the
advantages of the instructiveness of social media to marketers. According to the authors,
the possibility to interact freely on social media is a very important tool for marketers,
and it has changed the way marketers talk to their targets by posting and allowing people
to respond to the posts. The article also offers the opinions of a few thinkers like Victor
Frankl and William Penn on the issue of the growth of the opinion culture. The
importance of the article in completing the research is that it offers examples of how
traditional media offers interactive communication and allows people to express their
opinions and how social media allows people to give opinions. From the article, it is clear

that the more interactive nature of social media platforms makes it more suited to shape
the culture in the current opinion culture.

The author discusses social media and mass media as well as the impacts that have come
from development and improvements in both kinds of communication with relation to
their impacts on cultural and social stability. The author reviewed the available literature
on the theme to develop the research paper. According to the scholar, media affects the
sociological characteristics of societies because it enables the integration of
communication between individuals and among people in societies. The author also
described media as a tool for communication that positively affects the process of
information exchange and involves activities such as the sharing of music, audiovisual,
cinema, and written communications, as is the case of print media. However, if abused,
media can also cause damage in the societies that they exist that cannot be repaired.
According to the author, as communication has developed and changed over time, the
factors concerning time have also become important. The author also says that in a world
that has threats such as terrorism, the effects of efficient communication become very
apparent. According to the author, social media has brought additional advantages to the
media. Social media has revolutionized marketing and other fields, such as research that
requires the interaction between the communicators and their audience. Social media has
affected areas such as business, politics and human resources. Therefore, people can get

Abstract
Improvements in internet technology and the developments in web 2.0 have led to social media
sites being so popular in popular culture that their effects cannot be ignored. Social media sites
are among the most viewed sites in the whole world. Therefore, social media now affects not
only how people decide during elections, but how they buy and sell things and how they spend
their time. The excessive use of time on social media has also come with challenges that largely
concern mental health. The dominance of social media has tremendously increased over the last
few years due to improvements in the sites, connectivity and internet technology.
Social media affects campaigns and agenda-setting and is, therefore, replacing mainstream media
such as radio and television in as the main campaign tool. Also, social media enables brands to
access cost-effective marketing that is tailor-made to reach the target audience. Social media has
also replaced mainstream media as the means of people fighting injustice and enhancing
democracy across the world. Social media also allows people to post entertaining content and
share music and art across borders leading to the sharing of cultures and spending time. Even
though the impacts of social media are obvious, some limitations make social media overuse
detrimental. Social media leads to users losing connects with actual people in the society and
making more connections with virtual friends and therefore inducing stress
Social media also has adverse impacts on education and the mental health of students in college.
Social media also leads to the spreading of fake news due to there being no efficient filtering of
the information that passes through social media. The many advantages and limitations of social
media, therefore, mean that social media should be used in society as an additional source of
information rather than a replacement.
