Studying communication seems quite easy to many people, since everyone participates in
communication activities each day. Therefore, students sometimes think they should not encounter
anything really mysterious or foreign as they study this subject. It is, after all, not a foreign
language and not rocket science.
However, just because a process occurs frequently doesn’t mean that you understand it. Therefore,
you need to comprehend communication before you can improve it. Of course, you are human, and
as such, you can communicate at one level or another. However, you should understand enough
about the communication process that you can improve your communication decisions. For
example, in the opening scene of The Bourne Identity, which you watched earlier in the lesson,
Giancarlo probably never took a communication course, but common sense told him to make eye
contact with Bourne, speak in a firm yet calm tone, and affirm that he was Bourne’s friend. Bourne
responded by withdrawing his hostile and aggressive questions to return eye contact and quizzically
listen to Giancarlo. Reflecting on this scene, Giancarlo must have wondered what could have
happened. Could Bourne have killed him? What if Giancarlo had jogged Bourne’s memory?

What is Communication Decision Making?

Communication decision making is the process of reaching a clearly defined communication goal.
This goal may be reached by gathering and preparing information and applying a communication
plan that uses the communication decision-making tool DECIDE, presented earlier in the lesson. The
key point is that in order to be an effective communicator, you must be conscious of the decisions
you make and PLAN for your communication. The best way to do this is by using the steps outlined
in the DECIDE:
Step 1: Define communication goal
In this first step, you want to decide on your communication goal. You need to ask yourself,
“What is it that I want to accomplish, or what is my purpose in this communication
situation?” You can do this by thinking about what your goal could look like or sound like
when it has been achieved. Examples of communication goals might include understanding
your spouse’s day at work, asking for a promotion at your job, convincing your child to do
his or her homework, or understanding the charges on your credit card bill.

Step 2: Evaluate receiver/situation
Decisions for step 2 need to be based on decisions already made for step 1. In this step, you
want to examine the variables that affect how you will construct your message relative to
your receiver or listener. The situation or context may include location, time, occasion,
relationship, and level of intimacy. This includes the need to examine and understand how
you perceive the other person and understand the physical and environmental factors that
may influence perception in the communication situation.
In addition, you need to examine any noise or interference, which is a broader term for
noise. Interference will always be present to some degree and is often categorized as
physical, psychological, or emotional. You need to figure out how you can reduce the impact
of the noise or interference, wherever it occurs, before and during your communication.
These variables will influence how you construct and deliver your message.
Step 3: Create message Decisions for step 3 need to be made based on decisions already made for
steps 1 and 2. For this step, you need to decide how you will construct your actual message based on the
information you’ve gathered thus far about your receiver and the communication context. You will ask,
“What are the word choices I need to make?”
Step 4: Identify communication strategy
Decisions for step 4 need to be made based on decisions already made for steps 1, 2 and 3.
In this step, you determine the communication strategy / method / channel that you will use
to deliver or present your message. Will you speak or deliver your message in person, via
email, via telephone, or through visual aids? Will you be using the manuscript delivery
method, or the memorized delivery method, or the extemporaneous delivery method, or the
impromptu delivery method?
You will want to select the communication strategy or method that will give you the greatest
advantage based on your communication goal, your receiver/situation, and the type of
message you are sending.
Step 5: Deliver message Decisions for step 5 need to be made based on decisions for steps 1, 2, 3 and
4. In this step, you decide to present your message to your receiver. You need to ask, “How will I deliver
my message? What tone, rate, and pitch will I use? Will I want to or need to use selected nonverbal
channels to convey my meaning?”
Step 6: Evaluate feedback and repeat process
In this step, you decide how to adjust and adapt your message to changing circumstances,
taking into account new information, including feedback from your receiver and unexpected
interference, which may affect your plan for reaching your communication goal. Effective
communication is an ongoing process of decision making, not a single, linear exchange of
information. This means you will evaluate your receiver’s feedback and create new

messages continuously, until you reach your communication goal or the communication
opportunity ceases to exist (such as the end of a conversation on a particular topic).

Perception Affects How We Communicate
It is important to understand how we perceive and understand the people and environment around
us affects our communication. Chapter 2.1 explains “Perception is the process of selecting,
organizing, and interpreting information.”
